SENT PACKING: THE PUPS BUNDLED INTO A SUITCASE

Great Britain prides itself as a nation of Dog-lovers, so it's difficult to understand what drives certain individuals to endanger and abuse our four-legged friends, and the recent plight of 8 plucky little pups bungled and zipped into a suitcase and dumped near Leeds in West Yorkshire paints a sorry reflection of our national obsession with our so-called "best friends".

The Dogs Trust has kindly sent us the pups story and photos:

It’s an open and shut case of animal abandonment. Eight pups were found in the Middleton area of Leeds zipped into a suitcase with just a tiny hole through which to breathe.

Thankfully, they were found by a woman who alerted the Leeds dog warden, who then brought the eight week old pups to Dogs Trust Leeds Rehoming Centre today.

The pups, reckoned to be Rottweiler crosses, are around eight weeks old and have come through their ordeal unscathed. Now Goggles, Flip, Flop, Amber, Solaire, Sunshine, Speedo and Snorkel are all on the lookout for kind and loving owners who can help them leave their emotional baggage behind.

Amanda Sands, manager of Dogs Trust Leeds, comments:

“We were told the woman who found them noticed that the suitcase appeared to be wriggling and squirming, and got the shock of her life when she opened it up. It is beyond belief that someone could dump these pups in such a heartless way.

We also had a litter of six pups abandoned yesterday too, so with these new ones to look after we’ve got a puppy crisis on our hands. Please do step forward if you have the time and energy to bring up a pup!”

The puppies in the suitcase story has inspired us to donate even more money this month to the Dogs Trust through the sale of our inspirational postcards and the Dogs Trust is delighted that your generosity will help abandoned dogs all over the UK just like Ambre and his friends to live a long and rewarding life. So go ahead and buy a set today and you could win a fabulous charicature portrait of your very own pooch! Yes we're giving away a very special portrait of a very special pet to one very lucky person. All you have to do is buy a set of our inspirational dog cards from our secure on-line store and your name will automatically be put forward to win a charicature portrait of your pet. And who knows maybe Ambre, Solaire or one of the pack may grow up to be as inspiring as "Major" one of US dog-trainer Mary Staldelbacher's incredible painting dogs. Mary has been training abandoned dogs, just like those in the suitcase, for decades and nurturing them into service dogs. This means they aid less able-bodied humans to do the little things in life that most of us take for granted such as loading and unloading the washing machine, undressing or even simply closing the car door. Mary came up with the idea to teach her dogs to paint as a novel way to raise funds for her organisation Shore Service Dogs, where she transforms the abandoned and abused dogs into unsung heroes. Her own dogs, after much meticulous training, are now adept at holding and dipping their paint-brushes and their art has been described as "free-spirited, colour splashed abstracts" and is currently on exhibition at Salisbury University in the US.
